Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome occurs when not enough tears are produced or tears evaporate too quickly and there is not enough lubrication for the eye. Common symptoms include burning, irritation, redness, “tired-feeling eyes,” or even excessive tearing. This condition can occur at any age, although it is more common in older patients and particularly in post-menopausal women.

Treatment options include artificial tears/gels, placement of punctal plugs to slow drainage of tears/lubricants, nutritional supplements, or prescription medications to stimulate tear production or decrease inflammation. If you are having symptoms, please contact Southern Shores Eye Center for an evaluation.
