Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. It is a disease that affects the optic nerve, which is the part of the eye that carries the images we see to the brain. When damage to the optic nerve occurs (as in glaucoma), blind spots occur. At first, these may be small and unnoticeable to the patient and affect peripheral vision first, but if left untreated, permanent vision loss or even complete blindness can occur.

However, glaucoma can be detected early with frequent eye exams and early treatment can be effective in limiting vision loss. The doctors at Southern Shores Eye Center utilize state-of-the-art equipment to help diagnose and manage different types of glaucoma.
