Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a disease that affects the macula, a small area of the retina that is responsible for your central vision (reading, watching TV, driving) and allows you to see fine details clearly (threading a needle). The peripheral retina gives you your peripheral (or side) vision.

Macular degeneration affecting vision

Although there are different types of macular problems that become more common as one gets older, macular degeneration is the most common. Symptoms include blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty adjusting from bright to dim lighting situations, or changes in color perception in each eye.  There are different types of macular degeneration (wet and dry) and there are different therapies for each. The doctors at Southern Shores Eye Center can evaluate you for macular degeneration and discuss treatment and management options if necessary.
