What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment that has both medical and cosmetic applications. Botox has been used for many years as a medical treatment for migraines when patients are experiencing frequent, severe headaches.

The team at Southern Shores Eye Center, P.A., also uses Botox to treat specific eye problems, including blepharospasm, which causes uncontrollable blinking or twitching of the eyelid, hemifacial spasms (a nervous system disorder in which the muscles on one side of the face twitch involuntarily), and strabismus (crossed eyes).

Used cosmetically, Botox can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and help give you a more youthful appearance. It’s especially effective in treating forehead and brow lines and the frown lines between your eyebrows.

How does Botox work?

The active ingredient in Botox comes from a botulinum toxin that causes paralysis. The refined version in Botox contains tiny amounts of the chemical that causes muscle paralysis, but is very safe when administered by trained professionals like the team at Southern Shores Eye Center, P.A.

Botox Cosmetic works by disrupting the signals between the nerves in your face and the muscles they control. If the muscles aren’t receiving any instructions to move, they relax and smooth out, and your wrinkles smooth out too.

In medical applications, Botox works by paralyzing the muscles that are causing spasms or twitches. When the muscles relax, crossed eyes can regain a more normal aspect, and the continuous blinking seen in blepharospasm calms down.
